Livestock Competition Manager - Minnesota State Fair

The Minnesota State Fair Competition department is responsible for the management and execution of hundreds of livestock competitions not only during the 12 days of the Fair, but also year-round! The department interacts with exhibitors from all over the State of Minnesota and strives to foster growth and relationships within the livestock exhibitor community. This position is responsible for managing and overseeing programming and scheduling of the horse (hunter & jumper, draft, signature, western and WSCA) and open livestock (beef cattle, dairy cattle, sheep, swine, boer and dairy goats, llamas, stock dogs and poultry) and 4-H competitions for the Minnesota State Fair.


Essential Functions:

  • Oversee department superintendents and programming:

    • Provide oversight of superintendents and assist them with employee selection and department management.

    • Oversee premium book revisions and distribution.

    • Provide department superintendents with requested exhibitor and entry reports and information.

    • When necessary, assist with the selection and hiring of new superintendents.

  • Manage all aspects of the State Fair’s special awards and sponsorships for the horse and open livestock departments.

  • Prepare and reconcile departmental budgets, including creating reports and approving expenditures.

  • Manage the departmental entry, results and premium processes and necessary post-fair follow up and wrap-up.

  • Coordinate and provide updated website information for open livestock and horse departments.

  • Coordinate livestock and horse exhibitor awards and recognition including ribbons, plaques, trophies, and banners.

  • Manage the state fair horse show, including but not limited to:

    • Process and secure the necessary paperwork and fees for the various horse associations.

    • Ascertain qualifications and select qualified judges for employment.

    • Assist/train judges, announcers and division staff on procedures.

    • Collaborate with discipline coordinators and horse barn manager.

  • Coordinate Minnesota Beef Expo junior show and sales entries using an online registration system:

    • Generate back tags, show catalogs, financials and required reports.

    • Provide customer service to end-users via telephone and email.

    • Train junior show staff in use of system.

    • Calculate junior show premier exhibitor winners.

  • Work closely with Coliseum & Livestock Complex Manager on fair-time event scheduling and logistics.

  • Hire and supervise official state fair veterinarian and maintain strong relationship with Minnesota Board of Animal Health.

  • Work environment includes occasional exposure to livestock areas including dusty conditions.

  • During peak activity times work extra daily hours and periods with no days off. These time periods include weekend work during the month of August and during the 12 days of the Fair.

  • Assist with tasks as assigned by either the immediate supervisor or CEO.


Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in animal science, agricultural education, agricultural communications or related area of study; four years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Background in production agriculture and stock shows.

  • Excellent communication skills and a strong ability to interact with all in a professional, helpful, courteous, and tactful manner.

  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with all levels of employees, management, exhibitors and contractors.

  • Strong organizational and follow-up skills with attention to detail.

  • Computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite and Filemaker Pro.

  • Valid driver’s license.
